Everyone’s talking about Wegovy, but when can you get it in the UK?
Wegovy, also known as semaglutide, has been hailed as a game-changer for people struggling with their weight. And it's not just the media that's excited - high-profile celebs like Elon Musk and Kim Kardashian have publicly endorsed the medication too! But when will it be available in the UK?

Wegovy is fully licensed by the medicines regulator, the MHRA, for weight loss. It’s been available in the United States since June 2021 (some people are buying it under the brand name of Ozempic, which is for diabetes) and it feels like Brits have had a long wait.
Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Wegovy, is keeping tight lipped apart from to say that it will be launched in the UK “in the Spring”. By our reckoning, Spring runs until the end of May, so we would expect it to be available by the end of next month at the latest.

So, how does it work?
Wegovy targets the body's hunger hormone, GLP-1, which reduces appetite and increases feelings of fullness. And the results speak for themselves! Clinical trials have shown that participants who took Wegovy lost an average of 15% of their body weight over 68 weeks. That's significantly more than the 2% weight loss which was recorded in the clinical trials for those who just focussed on diet and exercise.
It's not just about looking good, either - the weight loss achieved with Wegovy can have significant health benefits, reducing the risk of chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain types of cancer. Of course, as with any medication, there are potential side effects to be aware of, such as nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. And Wegovy isn't suitable for everyone, particularly those with a personal or family history of certain types of cancer.
Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine and your CheqUp physician will determine if it’s the right medication for you.
